    There are many scholarships and grants available in HK for students. This page will give a general outline and eligibility requirements for many opportunities!

    Primary and Secondary School Financial Assistance Schemes

    The School Textbook Assistance (TA) Scheme

    • For financially struggling  Primary 1 to Senior Secondary 3 students
    • The scheme covers the cost of essential school textbooks and other miscellaneous school-related items
    The Student Travel Subsidy (STS) Scheme:
    • For primary and secondary  students attending full day courses
    • Provides travel subsidies for financial struggling students if they have to make more than a 10 minute travelling journey to their designated school
    The Subsidy Scheme for Internet Access Charges (SIA):
    •  For full time students attending a primary level, secondary level or Diploma Yi Jin course
    • Provides a subsidy to financially struggling students families so e-learning internet costs can be met
    • The subsidy is granted per household and works with a flat rate.  
     

    2023-24 Scheme Amounts

    • Full Grant: $5,804 (P1-6), $6,100 (S1-3), $6,108 (S4), $5,594 (S5), $3,522 (S6)
    • Average Amount of Subsidy Disbursed: $4,506
    • Average travel fare to designated school
    • Average Subsidy for the School Sector: $2,429
    • Average Subsidy for the Tertiary Sector: $1,787
    • Full Grant: $1,700 HKD
    • Half Grant: $850 HKD

    Diploma Yi Jin (DYJ)

    What is it?

    • A tuition fee reimbursement which provides financial aid for financially struggling students
    • Students can receive 30%, 50% or 100% reimbursement to their tuition
    •  Mandatory to complete the DYJ
    • The subjects must be mandatory to complete the DYJ

    2022-3 Criteria

    • You can find if you are eligible by going through a test (AFI information above) administrated by the Student Finance Office (SFO). If you receive the Eligibility Certificate (EC) issued by the SFO you can receive certain amounts of aid
    • Overall pass and a 80% attendance  for the subject (max of 8)
    • Verification of the student’s enrolment information at their institut

    Method Of Assesment:

    • The adjusted family income calculation is used to determine the eligibility of a student receiving financial assistance
    • The calculation: Gross annual income of a family/number of family members+1
    • Full Assistance: AFI between $0 – 43,495 HKD
    • Half Assistance: AFI between $43,496 – 84,105 HKD
    • Ineligible: AFI >84,105

    The Sir Edward Youde Memorial Prizes give $1000 HKD to award winners (2023-24) . Their aim is to give senior secondary students regardless of what school they go to a learning and leadership abilities. Students must have a HK identity card, have lived in HK for 3 or more years, be a full term students, and be recommended by their principal or executive director of VTC. 

    This award aims to recognize the achievements of students who have aimed extraordinary results in the  the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE). In the 2023/24 year, six applicants will be granted and receive a award, medal, and $5000 HKD cash prize. The students will be selected by  the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority and then go through interview rounds. 

    The Society of Japanese Language Education Hong Kong Scholarship aims to encourage youth in HK to learn Japanese and immerse into the culture. High school Japanese language course students can receive $3000 HKD scholarships, and Japanese Associate Degree and Higher Diploma students can receive an award of $6000 HKD. Group Submissions in the Group Research Project Award can win a $5000 HKD scholarship. 
     

    The Grantham Scholarships Fund provides maintenance grants to secondary students who are experiencing financial difficulties. The value of the amount received depends on critical conditions. 

    The Sing Tao Charitable Foundation Students’ Loan Fund’s Emergency Loan for certain secondary schools approved by the EDB assists students in adverse financial difficulties with interest free loans which is extremely important. Applicants can apply through their respective schools and while the years fund is currently available.   

    The scholarship fund provides secondary 4-6 students an opportunity to enter the agricultural product/marine fish industry area as they can receive financial assistance. Students are eligible to apply if they are a full time student who are in Secondary 4-6, have lived in HK for at least 3 years, and family have a connection to the industries listed above.
